Renewal Takes Root: Growing Beauty Together in the City

Melanie Korn

A Fresh Welcome to Our Campus

If you’ve driven past South City Community School this summer, you may have noticed something new taking shape.

The aging garden beds that have welcomed students and families for years have been thoughtfully rebuilt, creating a fresh and beautiful entrance to our campus. While the new landscaping certainly enhances our school, what makes these gardens truly special is the story behind them.

Over several days this summer, volunteers from Greentree Church worked alongside members of the SCCS staff to remove old materials, rebuild each garden bed, and prepare them to flourish for many years to come. It was hard work, accomplished through willing hands, joyful service, and a shared commitment to investing in our school and our city.

This project also marks an exciting milestone as Greentree Church became an official church partner of South City Community School in 2026. We are grateful for their partnership and the many ways they are already living out their commitment to serve.

Why Church Partnerships Matter

Church partnerships are about so much more than financial support. They are a picture of the Body of Christ working together to strengthen our community.

Our partner churches serve alongside us, share our mission with their congregations, provide leadership through board service and volunteers, encourage future educators, and help make an accessible Christian education available to more families throughout St. Louis. Together, we are investing in the flourishing of children, families, neighborhoods, and the city we all call home.

Beauty Tells a Story

Every act of care tells a story. Every improvement communicates that this place matters. Every volunteer who gives their time reminds our students that they are valued and worth investing in.

The new garden beds are more than landscaping—they are a visible reminder that beauty has the power to inspire hope. When we care for our surroundings, we communicate dignity. When we restore what has aged, we point toward the possibility of renewal. These small acts of stewardship become signs of a greater story unfolding throughout our city.

Thank You, Greentree Church

To everyone from Greentree Church who gave their time, talents, and energy this summer, thank you. Your work has created something beautiful that will welcome our community for years to come, and it serves as a visible reminder of what is possible when people come together with a shared purpose.

The next time you drive by campus, take a moment to notice the gardens. They are more than new landscaping—they are a small but meaningful picture of the renewal we pray will continue to grow throughout our school, our neighborhoods, and the City of St. Louis.
