Why Preschool Is Such an Impactful Experience for Children Ages 2–5

Melanie Korn

The preschool years are a uniquely formative season of childhood. During this time, children are not simply learning letters, numbers, or routines; they are learning how to be a person in the world at a place like school. At South City Community School, we believe preschool lays the helpful foundation for loving learning by nurturing relationships, curiosity, and a deep sense of belonging.

Learning Through Relationships

At the heart of a meaningful preschool experience is relationships. Young children learn best through connection—with peers and with caring adults who know them well. In a relational environment, children practice how to:

  • Play with others
  • Appropriately share materials and take turns
  • Communicate feelings and ideas
  • Advocate for their needs
  • Develop tools to handle their evolving emotions
  • Follow expectations within a caring community

These skills don’t develop in isolation. They are shaped through daily interactions—building block towers together, resolving conflicts with guidance, listening during circle time, and celebrating small wins side by side. In these moments, children begin to understand empathy, self-regulation, and mutual respect.

Learning to Play, Explore, and Wonder

Play is often called the “work” of childhood—and for good reason. Through imaginative and active play, children make sense of the world around them. They test ideas, experiment with cause and effect, and build social and cognitive skills naturally.

Rooted in the Charlotte Mason education philosophy, South City Community School values childhood as a time for wonder, discovery, and joy. Charlotte Mason believed that children are whole persons, no matter how small. We believe they are capable, curious, and worthy of rich experiences. Preschoolers thrive when learning is not rushed or overly academic, but instead honors their natural desire to explore (and ask many, many, many questions).

The Importance of Nature and the Outdoors

Time spent outdoors is a vital part of a child’s early development. Whether observing (and holding) bugs, collecting leaves, feeling the change of seasons, or simply running and playing freely, nature offers endless opportunities for learning.

Outdoor experiences support physical development, creativity, and attention, while also inviting children to slow down and notice the beauty around them. In keeping with Charlotte Mason’s emphasis on nature study, preschoolers at SCCS are encouraged to engage with the natural world—not just as a backdrop for play, but as a teacher in itself.

Growing in Love, Faith, and Belonging

Preschool is also a powerful time for nurturing the heart. Children learn who they are and how deeply they are loved—not only through words, but through experience. When a teacher kneels to listen, when a peer offers comfort, when forgiveness is modeled and practiced, children begin to understand love in tangible ways.

At South City Community School, faith is woven naturally into daily life. We believe children come to know God’s love best by experiencing love from others first. Through gentle guidance, consistent care, prayer, and shared moments of joy, children are invited to see themselves as known, valued, and created with purpose.

A Strong Foundation for What Comes Next

The preschool years are not about getting ahead—they are about building a strong foundation. When children feel safe, connected, and curious, they are prepared not only for kindergarten but for life as learners and community members.

At South City Community School, preschool is a place where relationships are nurtured, curiosity is celebrated, faith is lived out, and childhood is honored. We are grateful to walk alongside families during this vital season of development and to help children begin their educational journey with joy, confidence, and love.
