Early elementary education is a critical season for habit formation. During these years, children are not only learning math, writing, and reading skills — they are developing daily, personal patterns of responsibility, cleanliness, self-discipline, and care for their environment that will shape their future experience of the world.
Charlotte Mason believed that education is, in large part, the formation of habits. Through gentle consistency and thoughtful guidance, children learn habits such as careful attention, respectful communication, persistence, and organization. They practice caring for their materials, keeping their spaces orderly, and taking responsibility for their actions. These small, daily rhythms build confidence and independence.
Rather than rushing children toward performance, a Charlotte Mason approach emphasizes steady, intentional growth. When strong habits are established early, they become second nature and support students in every stage of life.
One of our favorite habits to practice at SCCS is the habit of imagining. Children delight in rich stories filled with heroic adventures, faraway places, and meaningful narratives rather than empty or frivolous entertainment. Through exposure to living books and creative expression, they develop curiosity, creativity, and the ability to express themselves across many mediums.
Equally important, yet often overlooked, is the habit of temper and fortitude. Children are guided toward good temper — cultivating patience, cheerfulness, humility, and kindness instead of frustration or discouragement. They learn to bear small hardships with courage, developing emotional resilience, mental strength, and perseverance. These habits equip them to face challenges with determination and grace.
When early education intentionally nurtures these habits, it does more than prepare children academically. It forms character, builds resilience, and lays a foundation for thoughtful, capable adulthood.
