Culturally Responsive Teaching: A Key to Student-Centered Learning

Melanie Korn

Many educators agree that a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching falls short of meeting the needs of diverse students. A more individualized, student-centered approach, like Culturally Responsive Teaching, not only recognizes students’ unique experiences and identities but also leverages them to boost student engagement and learning outcomes. At South City Community School, Culturally Responsive Teaching is an essential part of our mission to support and nurture each student, as we teach the whole child, not just educating their intellect.

What is Culturally Responsive Teaching?

Culturally Responsive Teaching, based on Gloria Ladson-Billings’ 1994 framework of culturally relevant pedagogy, views students’ cultural backgrounds as integral to their learning process. This approach embraces the understanding that culture shapes our worldviews and interactions, including how we learn and process information. Culturally Responsive Teaching provides a framework for creating a learning environment where each student’s cultural strengths are recognized and harnessed, leading to increased motivation and academic achievement.

Practically, teachers have a few opportunities to bring these strategies to life:

  1. We encourage students to draw on prior knowledge. Every student enters the classroom with diverse experiences. Teachers can encourage students to draw on their prior knowledge (cultural experiences) in order to contribute to group discussions, which provides an anchor to learning.
  2. Our staff makes learning contextual! For example, through literature in history class our students might discuss why it matters today, in our school, and in our community. Our teachers are encouraged to take concepts and create projects that enable students to draw parallels.
  3. Our teachers have taken inventory of the books in our classroom libraries. We’ve asked the questions, “do they include authors of diverse races?” “What backgrounds do the main characters have?” “Do the books include urban families and suburban families?” Not only in our classroom libraries, but we also consider the posters we display on the walls and bulletin boards.
  4. The most powerful tool we have at SCCS is the relationships we build. Putting the child’s personhood first allows students to feel respected, valued, and seen for who they are and honors where they’ve come from. This fosters a culture of safety and belonging, which frees children up to critically think and have a sense of wonder as they learn.

In her book Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain, educator Zaretta Hammond describes Culturally Responsive Teaching as an “educator’s ability to recognize students’ cultural displays of learning and meaning-making and respond positively and constructively with teaching moves that use cultural knowledge as a scaffold.” This means that, rather than viewing culture as a barrier, teachers utilize it as a bridge to connect students’ prior knowledge to new concepts. By developing social-emotional connections with students, educators create safe spaces for learning, allowing students to thrive both academically and personally.

Why is Culturally Responsive Teaching Important?

When students feel seen, heard, and understood, they’re more likely to engage with the material and take ownership of their learning. Culturally Responsive Teaching acknowledges that academic success is influenced by a student’s cultural context and that leveraging this context can significantly improve learning. By creating an inclusive environment, Culturally Responsive Teaching promotes an equitable classroom where all students have the opportunity to succeed.

What Culturally Responsive Teaching Is and Isn’t

Culturally Responsive Teaching is:

  • A bridge between home and school life: It acknowledges the unique backgrounds of students and creates a seamless learning experience that connects their home experiences to the classroom.
  • Affirming of students’ history and culture: Culturally Responsive Teaching respects and values each student’s cultural heritage, allowing students to see themselves represented in the curriculum.
  • Focused on student voices and learning styles: Lessons and classroom activities center on students’ diverse ways of learning and expressing knowledge.

Culturally Responsive Teaching is not:

  • Confusing race and culture as being the same: Culturally Responsive Teaching recognizes the diversity within each racial group and does not assume all students from a particular background share identical experiences.
  • Only about motivating students of color: While Culturally Responsive Teaching supports students from all backgrounds, it is about fostering inclusivity for everyone in the classroom.
  • Reliant on a single method: It avoids a “one-size-fits-all” approach, understanding that engagement strategies should be tailored to each classroom’s unique dynamic.
  • About mastering every cultural detail: Teachers don’t need to be experts in every culture; they instead cultivate a mindset of openness, empathy, and continuous learning from students.
  • Simply adding history or content related to specific groups: Culturally Responsive Teaching involves integrating diverse perspectives in all subjects, not just spotlighting certain histories or figures.

How South City Community School Implements Culturally Responsive Teaching

At South City Community School, we are deeply committed to fostering an environment where every student’s culture and identity are celebrated and valued. As lifelong learners, our team is dedicated to ongoing research, professional development, and implementing practices that support the holistic growth of our students.

In alignment with our strategic plan, our staff participated in culturally responsive teaching training with Peak Leadership during the 2023-2024 school year. Building on this foundation, the 2024-2025 school year has centered on strengthening our faculty culture, with a focus on cultivating trust, belonging, and collaboration among staff.

Our goal is to continue to build a school culture that promotes strong relationships between educators and students, understanding student’s individual needs, and fostering a welcoming and inclusive learning environment. By embracing Culturally Responsive Teaching, we support not just the academic growth but also the emotional and social development of every student.

A Final Word on the Value of Culturally Responsive Teaching

Culturally Responsive Teaching isn’t just a teaching method—it’s a commitment to understanding and valuing each student’s cultural heritage and fostering an inclusive, respectful community. As we continue to invest in Culturally Responsive Teaching practices, we strive to create a school where all students can reach their fullest potential, and where teachers, students, and families work together to create a vibrant, inclusive learning environment.
